The Refugio Maze: Who Sells What, and When

Nobody warns you that the W Trek’s crux comes eight months early, at a laptop. Here is the machine, plainly.

Two companies, one trail

Every bed and legal campsite on the W belongs to one of two private operators, split roughly down the middle of the route:

A standard west-to-east W sleeps in Vértice territory first and finishes in Las Torres territory - which means every full W requires accounts, bookings and confirmations with both companies, on two separate websites, with two separate payment flows. There is no combined checkout. This is not a design flaw you can route around; it is the system.

When the windows open - and what vanishes first

Both operators open sales for the following season in the southern autumn: Las Torres typically around mid-May, Vértice usually some weeks later - and the offset matters, because you cannot finalize an itinerary until both sides confirm. The choke points sell out first: Chileno (the bed closest to the towers, and the key to a sunrise at their base) and the convergence nights where W and O Circuit itineraries overlap. Peak-season (December-February) beds at the choke points can be gone within weeks of opening; camping pitches last longer but follow the same curve.

And the rule that gives the maze its teeth: the park requires every night reserved before it lets you start a multi-day route. No reservations, no trek - rangers check the paperwork at the gate. A W with one missing night is not a slightly riskier W; it is a day hike.

The DIY playbook, compressed

Decide your direction and nights in April. Open accounts with both operators before the windows do. Book the instant sales open - Chileno and your convergence nights first, the easy nights after. Screenshot every confirmation; carry them offline. If a night is sold out, check again in September- October when cancellation waves free up beds, or reshape the route around Central-sector nights, which last longest. Budget the operators’ own meal plans honestly - self-catering saves real money but weighs real kilograms.

There is nothing noble about the maze; it’s an artifact of a concession structure, not a rite of passage. The guided W package exists precisely to absorb it: one booking, and the beds, meals, transfers and guide are someone else’s spreadsheet. It costs more than DIY - the cost fork guide prices the gap without cosmetics - but when the windows have already closed for your dates, it is often the only door still open, because operators hold allocations.
