Grey Glacier: The Boat, the Walk and Getting There
What the sailing covers, how to reach the pier from Puerto Natales, and the one-way boat for W trekkers.

Grey Glacier is the ice at the western end of the W, a tongue of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field that ends in Lago Grey in a wall of blue and white. You can see it from the trail at the Grey viewpoint, but only the boat takes you up to the front. The sailings leave from the beach below Hotel Lago Grey, and a handful of tours add the transport from Puerto Natales.
What the sailing is
The boat is the Grey III, a catamaran with a main cabin for 98 passengers and an outside deck. From the beach below Hotel Lago Grey it takes about an hour to reach the glacier front, a wall of ice more than 25 metres high, then runs along its faces before heading back; the round trip lasts about 2 hours 45 minutes. A pisco sour is served on board, and the boat calls at Refugio Grey, where W trekkers get on or off.
Two things surprise people:
- The walk to the boat. The catamaran leaves from a beach, not a dock by the car park: about 45 minutes on foot along Grey Beach (3 km), often into the wind. It is not suitable for people with limited mobility.
- The check-in time. The time on your booking is the check-in at the hotel, an hour before the boat sails. For the first sailing, check-in is at 08:30 and the boat leaves at 09:30.
The featured boat tour cost $130 a person in October 2026 for the sailing and the pisco sour. Park entry and transport are not included, and if the sailing is cancelled for weather you get a full refund.

2026-27 prices at the hotel
Hotel Lago Grey publishes its own fares for sailings between 1 October 2026 and 30 April 2027: CLP 120,000 for an adult round trip and CLP 60,000 for children aged 5 to 12; children under 5 sail free. One-way tickets, used by trekkers, cost CLP 110,000 for adults. Each sailing needs at least 25 passengers to run, and the boat does not exempt you from the park pass, which you buy online at pasesparques.cl.
Getting there from Puerto Natales
Hotel Lago Grey is 103 km from Puerto Natales by the shortest road, about two hours each way, and the sailing itself does not include a transfer. You have three options:
| Option | Price (Oct 2026) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Boat tour only | $130 | the sailing; your own car or transfer to the hotel |
| Boat tour with transport | $300 | pickup in Puerto Natales, the sailing, a guide on board |
| Boat trip plus the park by van | $300 | the morning sailing, then the park’s viewpoints; at most 5 people |
The boat-plus-park day uses the 10:00 sailing and spends the afternoon on the viewpoints at Lago Pehoé, Salto Grande and Lago Nordenskjöld, leaving the park at Laguna Amarga. It makes the most of a single day for non-trekkers.
The one-way boat for W trekkers
If you walk the W from west to east, the boat changes the first two days. Instead of walking from Paine Grande to Refugio Grey and back the same way, you can walk out to Grey and sail back across the lake to the Hotel Lago Grey beach, or the other way round, on a one-way ticket. It turns an out-and-back into a crossing with the glacier front in the middle, and it frees a day. The nights at Grey and Paine Grande still need booking with Vértice.
Which month?
The sailing runs in the park’s summer season, and the hotel’s fares above cover October to April. Wind is the deciding factor at any time of year: the operator suspends sailings when the lake is unsafe. Plan the boat early in your stay so a cancelled sailing can move to another day. For everything else in the park, see the W Trek guide and the Base of the Towers day hike. Ready? Compare the options or check live availability.

Grey Glacier Boat Tour Questions
Price, duration, the walk to the boat and the season, answered plainly.
Hotel Lago Grey's own fares for 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027 are CLP 120,000 for an adult round trip and CLP 60,000 for children aged 5 to 12; one way costs CLP 110,000 for adults. The featured tour on this page cost $130 in October 2026. Park entry is extra in every case.
About 2 hours 45 minutes on the lake: an hour to reach the glacier front, time along the ice and the return. Add about 45 minutes on foot each way between Hotel Lago Grey and the boat, and an hour for check-in before sailing.
If you want to see the glacier up close, yes: the trail only reaches viewpoints above the lake, while the boat runs along a front more than 25 metres high. Recent passengers mostly write about the crew and the size of the ice. Skip it if a 3 km beach walk in strong wind would be a problem.
Hotel Lago Grey is 103 km from Puerto Natales by the shortest road, about two hours each way. The sailing does not include transport, so drive, book a transfer, or take one of the tours on this page that include pickup in Puerto Natales.
Yes. The boat calls at Refugio Grey, so trekkers can walk out to Grey and sail back across the lake to the Hotel Lago Grey beach, or the reverse, on a one-way ticket instead of walking the same trail twice.
The operator suspends sailings when wind makes the lake unsafe, and a cancelled sailing on the featured tour is refunded in full. Book the boat early in your stay so it can move to another day.
