When to Walk the W

Patagonia’s calendar question has a twist most months-guides miss: the best month is partly decided for you in May, when the refugio windows open and the peak dates start disappearing.

The season, month by month

November - late spring, and the connoisseur’s answer to “is it too early?”: no. Long days, trails open, demand a clear notch below peak - and, practically, the month most likely to still have beds when you start booking. The trades: leftover snow possible on high sections, and the wind already awake.

December–February - high summer. The longest days, the warmest temperatures, every service running - and the season’s strongest winds, biggest crowds and fastest sell-outs. If these are your dates, book the instant windows open and take the guided package route seriously; operator allocations outlive the public portals.

March - the photographer’s shoulder: wind easing, southern beech turning gold late in the month, demand falling. Days shorten noticeably; dawn summit pushes get more civilized in timing and colder in fact.

April and October - the brackets. Beautiful, moody, increasingly closed: services thin, weather swings harden, and the O Circuit’s back side is shut. For experienced trekkers with flexible plans only.

May–September - winter. The W itself becomes a guided- only, specialist undertaking; this site’s honest advice is a different trip or a different season.

The wind, named plainly

Every month above shares one governor: Patagonian wind, which peaks with the summer and can stop a day’s plan regardless of sunshine. It is why guided departures carry weather margin, why itineraries here should too - and why no operator, and no website, promises a view. The towers decide.
