The W Trek, Booked Honestly

The W is Patagonia's most famous walk - and the only famous walk whose hardest section is the reservation system. This site explains the refugio maze honestly (you book those direct, and we say exactly where), prices the guided-vs-DIY fork with real numbers, and features the one piece almost everyone should book either way: the guided day trek to the base of the towers - 4.8/5 across 196 hikers, $109, free cancellation.

How the W Actually Gets Booked

Four steps, the maze named first.

  1. Name the Maze

Every W night sleeps in a refugio or campsite run by one of two companies - Las Torres (east) or Vértice (west) - and you must hold every night before the park lets you through. This is the part that sells out, not the trail.

  2. Pick Your Fork

DIY means booking both operators direct the week windows open (~May for the following season) and self-hauling logistics. Guided packages buy out the whole maze - beds, meals, transfers, guide - at a real premium.

  3. Time It Honestly

The season runs November to March; December-February is peak wind and peak demand both. Shoulder months trade a little daylight for calmer bookings - the best-time guide has the honest month-by-month.

  4. Book the Towers Either Way

The base-of-the-towers day is the W's crown and works as a standalone: guided, small group, from Puerto Natales. If the maze defeats your dates, this is the piece to save.

Which Torres del Paine?

The full guided W, the towers in a day, or the park by vehicle. Same granite; very different weeks.

Here is the sentence that reorganizes most people’s W Trek planning: the trail is not the hard part - the reservation system is. Roughly 80 kilometers over four to five days, on maintained paths with beds and hot meals at the end of each stage, the W is demanding but civilized walking. What actually defeats trekkers is that every one of those beds belongs to one of two private operators - Las Torres Patagonia on the east side, Vértice on the west - whose booking windows open around May for the following season and whose key nights sell out months ahead. And the park checks: without every night reserved, you don’t start. The refugio maze, mapped, is this site’s reason to exist.

That maze creates exactly two honest paths. The DIY path: book both operators direct the week windows open, self-cater or buy meal plans, and carry your own margin for error - roughly $600–900 per person camping, more with beds. The handled path: a guided W package where one booking buys the beds, meals, transfers and a guide - the version of the trek where the maze is someone else’s job. The cost fork, priced side by side, is where the decision usually settles itself; the young guided listings here are new to GetYourGuide this season, and we say so rather than dress them up.

And one piece belongs in almost every Patagonia trip regardless: the guided day trek to the base of the towers - the W’s final, famous stage as a standalone from Puerto Natales. Small group, certified guide, 4.8/5 across 196 hikers, $109. If the refugios are gone for your dates, this is how you still stand under the towers; if you’re doing the full W, its logistics preview the whole route. The 5-day itinerary and the W-vs-O comparison cover the rest, and the from-Puerto-Natales logistics page gets you to the gate - entry pass included, which since May 2026 is priced by route rather than days alone.
